Makassar Ebony: Diospyros celebica: One of the classic true ebony woods, named for the Indonesian port of Makassar from which it was exported to Europe. Makassar ebony is also known as striped ebony or Calamander wood, with its mix of deep grey/ brown wood streaked through with jet black stripes. With a greater density and durability than Gaboon ebony, Makassar Ebony is known throughout south east asia as Indonesian Ironwood for its high durability and amazing finishing characteristics. Makassar is also known for being far more crack resistant than African ebony, making it a favorite of knife makers.

 

These blocks are over 70 years old, bone dry and ready to work.
